Self-Defense vs. Combat Sports Part II

There are tremendous benefits to be gained from training and competing in Combat Sports. Some being:

Conditioning
Improved speed and reaction time
Improved footwork and timing
Skill building
Attributed training as well as: economy of motion, PIA, strategies, power, reflexes, strength...etc
Competition allows you to evaluate your skills
Over coming fear...etc

We all agree that Sports is not real world...but competition is one way to measure your ability against an opponent who fights back. But what about the injury factor? I train for Self-Preservation how can I compete in Sport MA when I am always targeting the eyes, groin, headbutts, knees and elbows,??

Well, If we both agree not to kick each other in the groin, or rip each others eyes out...then we can compete!

I know if I can kick you in the stomach and score...I can probably kick you in the groin and hurt you.

If you can jab and hit me 50% of the time...then there is an excellent chance that you can also get that eye jab in and momentarily blind me.

If we roll around for 15 min doing BJJ and neither one of us dominate ...then there is a good chance we are pretty equal in that range, using submission skills only.... doesn't mean that if we ever find ourselves on the ground we will not hit hit hit! It just means...today...we eliminate the strikes and isolate our training to locks...or holds...or chokes..etc.
------------------
Eliminating the techniques that can serverly injure...allows us to practice and perfect certain skills we need for Self-Preservation...Jab, cross, kicks, holds, chokes, etc.

Just as we use heavy bags, shields, and focus gloves for training our kicks and strikes....Combat Sports allows us to train a multitude of skills against unknown opponents without fears of permanently injuring someone.

Competition improves ego, killer instinct, pain tolerance, concentration, mental toughness, emotional maturity,...

Combat Sports are fantastic...Look at Muay Thai, BJJ, JUDO, K-1...etc. those athletes are awesome and I sure wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley.
------------------
I continue to train for Self-Preservation...sticks, knife, Pound and Gound, weapons of opportunity, threat recognition, the RAT...but I like to compete to test my skills using agreed rules to prevent injury.

I am too old for tournaments but I compete against my students every week. Its fun, its exhausting but it keeps me in good functional order.

Training for both Self-Defense and Combat Sports will send your attributes through the ceiling and you will get to know yourself under pressure.

Whatever your choice...enjoy your training!!
